Vice President pushes digital economy development

Jakarta - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has asked all stakeholders to help develop the digital economy sector to strengthen Indonesia's independence in the sector.

"Indonesia must be digitally independent. The development of the digital economy must also be able to reach large, micro, and small business actors," he said at the National Mass Media Convention, held to commemorate the 2022 National Press Day (HPN) via video conferencing here on Monday.

Digital independence must become a movement and involve shared awareness of all elements of the nation, so that every active step from the community further strengthens efforts to build sovereignty in the midst of various challenges of digitalization, the Vice President added.

Speaking about digital development in the economic sector, he said digitalization has improved the national economy. This is evidenced by predictions that Indonesia's digital economy will become the strongest in the Southeast Asia region with a value of Rp1,700 trillion, he added.

"There were around 21 million new digital consumers during this pandemic, from early 2020 to mid-2021," he noted.

The accumulated purchase value of Internet users in Indonesia is also predicted to increase by 49 percent from US$47 billion to US$70 billion by the end of 2021, Amin said.

"As digital transactions increase, global capital flows are also projected to continue to enter Indonesia and this country will become the most popular investment destination in Southeast Asia, surpassing Singapore," he added.

The Vice President then urged all stakeholders in the economic sector to seek to improve Indonesia's competitiveness in the development of the national digital economy. []
